Jennifer Connelly is reported by Monsters and Critics, as saying that "Dark Water" is not a horror film. Instead she apparently told reporters that it is more of a psychological movie:

"I`m reluctant to call it a `horror` film. It`s more of a psychological thriller -- a ghost story. To me, I associate `horror` film with more gore -- slasher films. There`s no blood here. You get through lots of the film and no one`s died."

The film centres around a mother trying to cope with her recent divorce as well as a persisting leak in her apartment, which is more deadly than it seems.
