The adaptation of the musical "Hairspray" has had its start date pushed back by New Line. It will commence production in the spring of 2006. Co-directors Jerry Mitchell and Jack O´Brien have left the production. Mitchell choreographed the stage musical and O´Brien won a Tony for directing it.

The studio is considering Rob Marshall as its new director. The film will now be released in the summer of 2007.

John Travolta had been approached to play Edna Turnblad, but no real deals will be set until screenwriter Leslie Dixon completes her rewrite and a director is hired.
